Repeal the darkness
To the edges of the night
Scattered sky
In glosses bright
Shine away this
The starry sight
That carries me beside
To places far inside
A boy lost on its edge
This caverned ledge
Reaching to rescind
Coverings from above
Interceding shuffles lost
Pleading all but tossed
Initiators of sorrow
Prayers for tomorrow
Congregate so few
In this night so blue
On night’s edge I sit
Repeal the darkness

Plein Air

Plein is the air
That fills the lungs
Breath of brushes
Touch on pages
Empty and white
Leaving traces
Water and color
Of where one’s been
Only to discover
Where one has not
Life in tones asunder
Falling into sky’s
So rich in wonder

Morning Black

Morning black
It’s a love of mine
Balance of night
Meeting day
No shadows to give way
Only residue of yesterday
Stained in my cup
I peer inside
And with a shrug
Coffee is poured
Black to the brim
All my stains washed away
I love the morning black

I know nothing
Nothing of giving birth
To human flesh
The pains and pangs
The breaths of life
Being offered
Being extolled
Common but uncommon
Life in the womb
Growing expanding
Breathing in watered air
Conception giving way
To contractions worn thin
Life pushing
Making its way
To the passage
That only the divine
Could design
And in a moments time
Flesh is born
Into this world
Breathing seizing crying
Lying in its mother’s arms
I know nothing
Nothing of giving birth

But I know
Birthed in me
There is poetry
A poem
The seed of thought
Conception
One syllable after another
Words forming
Life in measured words
End to end lines
Stretching, reaching
To find the passageway
Words of another kind
Sprout from below
Growing expanding
Contractions begin
Inconspicuous jauntiness
Jabs and pushes
From mind to heart
To fingers stammering
In hopes to write
The poet – the poem
One more
Is born

Emptied

Run deep into the night
A rising brew above all the others
Only to drink to depths below
Leaving itself emptied
So as to drink no more

In the Course of Ages

In the course of the ages past
In the ages now and to come
There is planted in the make of man
A seed as black as the night of nights
A stain that marks each soul’s fabric
No washing washes the befoul of man
The mark of one is to be the mark of all
Blight is the color of the day and night
Storms that brew sweep down and on
Leaving the curse of the cursing to be
But through another of ineffable love
There rises above the dark One so pure
The seed marked but not bemired
Though sprung forth from blackened soil
It and it alone brought forth to cleanse
To cleanse the indelible mark of man
In peerless beauty to behold from above
Contrition rears itself in confession clean
Through the One the many are made new
A perfect flower of stainless purity saves
Calming the brewing storms so deep
Lifting the banished to be brought near
And in the course of ages eternal
Now and to come the bile is the beloved
And there this one rest in the Other

For Crying Out Loud

For crying out loud I would say
If I were to read my poetry out loud
I’d stumble over my loins and lines
Like an old man losing his balance street side
Falling down onto his buttons and behind
Legs straight up and feet dangling in the air
Making my appearance an out loud cry
And my words … for crying out loud
Why nothing more than absurdity
In a world apart lie the written and the spoken
And I … I am fine to leave them there
Written and left not spoken

Christmas Eve

Give notable notice
Green upon green
Red on green is laid
To make white as snow
I wonder of that night
Traveled in exhaustion far
Leaving little to be desired
Days to be completed
In the night a cry is heard
Cry of God for the cry of man
Birthed alone to die alone
God in flesh – flesh in God
Aged upon the ages to be
Pressed into the age of now
By wonder – by plan of grace
In this eve tonight
I wonder of him now

Reaching high – reaching low
Steadied in the breeze
Leaves pandering in shoveled sound
Aroused by the wind above
Left for all to know
There above in clouded form
Eternity awaits for me
This soul of mine is gathered in
In glossy refrains to hold the day
It is without thought all are at play
Curious to know and not to know
The how, the when, the why
Above me now I see and now I know
Eternity stretches above – beyond
Eclectic lines bow so ever low
I am and I will be as well as I have been
To say with little doubt – eternity
Above me and now in me
